Tokyo 2020: Busy medal day with women’s 10,000m

On the ninth day of the Olympic Games, women will be running in a marathon. Women will also be playing high jump, 10,000m and 4×400 relay. Men will be playing javelin and 1500m. In addition to these events, there are others that you should know about too!

What’s happening?

On day nine of the Tokyo 2020 athletics event, there will be many major events. The first one is the women’s marathon final followed by the high jump and 10,000m finals. Next are the javelin and 1,500m finals with relay races beginning afterward including both men’s 4x400m and women’s 4x400m finals to conclude it all.

Who should we expect to see?

The women’s marathon to be held in Hokkaido and Sapporo, has been an Olympic event since 1984 and Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei will be favourites alongside the Ethiopian trio of Birhane Dibaba, Rose Dereje and Zeineba Yimer. In the high jump, three-time world champion Maria Lasitskene of the Russia team is worth a look.

USA’s Emily Sisson will be competing with New Zealand’s Camille Bascombe and Ethiopia’s Tsehai Gemechu in the 10,000m final. Meanwhile men like Johannes Vetter of Germany and Finn Lassi Etelatalo will also compete for medals in their respective events.

Considering America’s deep past in this competition, it would not be surprising to see athletes representing the U.S. leading the relay over team members of other countries for a 4x400m event victory on Saturday while also giving some scare to female competitors from other nations that are more well-known in these niche competitions such as Alisson Felix of Brazil.

Hellen Obiri

Ethiopia’s Tsegay runs faster than Kenya’s Obiri in women’s 5000 meter preliminaries. Gudaf Tseabee ran 14:55.74 seconds to win the event for Heat 2 of the preliminary rounds, over two-time world champion Hellen Obirie from Kenya and fourth place finish USA runner, Elise Cranny.
