Fight: Stipe Miocic vs Francis Ngannou

Fighters in the article: Francis Ngannou

The UFC 260 mixed martial arts tournament took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. The heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic of the United States fought the challenger Francis Ngannou of France in the main fight of the tournament.

Stipe Miocic (38, USA)

Earlier this year, Stipe already faced Francis Ngannou. Miraculously, against all odds and on the eve of the UFC 220 tournament, he managed to survive his opponent’s initial onslaught before prevailing in a points-drawn battle.

Mike has good stance. He mainly fights with his hands but will sometimes throw low kicks as well. Most of his MMA victories are by knockout (15 out of 75) although he has never won via painful or choking hold.

Francis Ngannou (34, France)

Francis Ngannou is the heaviest puncher in UFC. After losses to Miocic and Derrick Lewis, the Frenchman won four fights by knockout in the first round; Curtis Blades, Kane Velasquez, Junior dos Santos and Jairzinho Rosenstrike were all hit hard by him. Ngann needed only 162 seconds in total.

Fighting history

According to sources, the UFC is unlikely to reschedule Francis Ngannou vs. Derrick Lewis 2 on August 7 due to conflicting schedules. At this point, September represents a new target month; whether or not it becomes a reality remains uncertain.

If the Ngannou vs. Lewis fight is removed from UFC 265, the event will likely be headlined by a bout of UFC welterweight champion Amanda Nunes vs. contender Julianna Pena. A number of other interesting bouts are currently scheduled for UFC 265, including welterweight Michael Chiesa vs. Vicente Luque, featherweight Jose Aldo vs. Pedro Munoz and women’s featherweight Angela Hill vs. Tecia Torres. However, even though these are all quality fights, fans certainly wanted to see the scheduled main event between Ngannou and Lewis the most. It looks like fans will have to wait a while longer.

UFC 266 is scheduled for September 25th, and Ngannou vs. Lewis could make it on as the No. 1 contender given that UFC bantamweight champion Jan Blachowicz vs. Glover Teixeira is already on the card and UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski vs. Brian Ortega will also be fighting at that show, but not for their titles.

The fight

The 12 fighters walked around the octagon without punching or fighting. They landed 31 punches for two in 15 minutes – Cormier and Miocic, who fought in the same tournament, hit each other 54 times in four minutes of the title fight. Ngannou only hit 11 times – less than a punch per minute. Lewis scored the remaining 20 or so. Fans booed them from middle of first round to end of fight. During second 5 minutes, referee even stopped fight explaining fighters should be fighting not playing stare down- it didn’t help

Result

The judges awarded the round to Lewis – presumably because he was swinging his limbs about rather than staying grounded. After the fight, Lewis wasn’t even interviewed in a traditional cage; there was nothing for Joe Rogan to ask. The UFC commentator called it “probably the worst heavyweight MMA fight of all time.”
