South Africa v Mexico: Tokyo 2020

South Africa will play Mexico in the third round of Group A. Their match is set to take place on July 28 at Sapporo Dome.

South Africa

The South African team have lost two in the group stage, first to Japan (1-0) and then France (4-3). They are dead last in points with six behind leader Japan and three behind arch-rivals France.

As history has shown, the South African team qualified for this year’s Olympics following the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. However, they lost three matches in their past three games. In their six recent games since February 23rd, they won once.

Mexico

Mexico kicked off its two-game match with France by dominating the second half and coming up with three points.

The Aztecs then lost to Japan in a game that ended 1-2. At the end of the 2 games, they are tied for second place at 3 points behind leader Japan, but still ahead of France, South Africa, and Angola.

The Mexican team has qualified for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, having beaten all of its opponents in tournament play. These friendly international matches were lost to Romania and Australia as well as one draw against Saudi Arabia.

Game assessment

The South African team played two classy games at the Olympics, where the players clearly jumped over their heads, but still failed to score a single point. At some point they will need to give up, and there should be a problem with their physical condition, because the schedule of the Games is very tight, and they play very energy-demanding football.

The Mexicans will persist given the demands of their higher skill, and that’s why we’re betting on them to win with a handicap (-1.5) at odds around 2.15.

Match results

Mexico won in a decisive 4-1 victory.
